It’s one of those days. Everyone wants a piece of you—your boss, your kids, your spouse, even your dog is needy! And while you’re more than happy to help, there comes a point where there’s nothing left to give, where you feel as if all of YOU has been parsed out to the world leaving an exhausted, hollow shell.
Believe it or not, there is a way to keep yourself from being emotionally doled out like slices of pizza. Starting the day with a simple three- to-five-minute meditation can help protect you from all those emotional vampires and give you a sense of peace to begin the day. This quick meditation visualization is fast enough to do almost anywhere (Think: coffee break) and powerful enough to keep you going through the rough patches of the day.
So, how does it work? Here’s a step-by-step plan of what to do.
First, find a chair or place where you can sit comfortably.
Close your eyes and take five deep breaths. Really breathe down deep to open up your chest and abdomen and release tension through your neck, chest, and back.
Visualize the tension leaving and calm relaxation replacing it.
Then, imagine a beautiful white light originating from the crown of your head and slowly falling over your body, as if you’re being covered in a protective shield.
As the white light encases you, feel its protective power surrounding you, feel its gentle warmth around you, feel its unconditional love enveloping you.
Then, after you are certain the light has fully embraced you, take your right hand, touch your belly button and turn three times counterclockwise to lock in the protection.
Now, go back to your breathing – five relaxing breaths. Remember, breathe deep, and while you're taking your breaths, visualize the beautiful white light around you, keeping you safe.
Next, imagine an indigo blue light originating from the crown of your head and forming on top of the white light. Watch as it encases you, forming a second protective layer over the white light. Take a minute to feel its protection and power as it surrounds you.
Again, after you are sure the indigo light has fully encircled you, take your right hand, touch your belly button and turn counterclockwise three times to lock in the protection.
Return to your breathing, and while taking your five deep breaths, observe the power of protection and the calming feelings provided by the two layers of light around you.
When you finish your breaths, imagine a divine golden light forming as a third layer at the crown of your head. Like the indigo light, the golden light stacks on top of the white and blue lights.
Breath deeply as this third gold light forms a divine armor around you. Feel its power and know how protected you are. Bask in its warmth and comfort, its comfortable, relaxing protection.
And, when you feel secure with all three layers, take your right hand, touch your belly button and turn three times to lock in the protection.
Focus again on your breathing, but this time also take some time to feel the incredible protection around you. Bask in this, as you breathe. And then, when you’re ready, bring your attention slowly back to the present and open your eyes.
With practice, this quick and effective meditation will get you through the day, but if for any reason you feel like you need a pick-me-up, take five and do it again! It’s that easy.
