Welcome to the holidays…and another round of Mercury Retrograde. If it seems that Mercury has been in retrograde a lot during the holidays, you’re right. Last year, it stationed itself retrograde for the entire winter holidays, toying with Christmas, Hannukah, Kwaanza and Boxing Day and igniting fireworks during New Year’s Eve, all before going direct New Year’s Day.
In 2022, it backpedaled right after Christmas, running its own show over the New Year’s holiday.
And now, here we are again with mischievous Mercury finding yet another way to barge into the holiday season, which is already fraught with stress.
So, what can you expect this time around?
Well, here’s some good news. We’ll start with the fact that Mercury is backflipping in the sign of Sagittarius. Now, the planet of logic, analysis and perfectionistic tendencies is in detriment in the sign of the centaur, which means it’s really not very comfortable there (unlike our last go-around where Mercury planted itself half the time in one of its ruling signs, Virgo).
With a bit of a limp in its moonwalk, it’s not as potent as usual, and this gives us a little break from the more challenging side of Mercury Retrograde.
Having said that, those ruled by the planet Mercury (you know who you are Virgo and Gemini) will, as usual, have to don their protective helmets for a few bumps. However, it shouldn’t be as rocky a ride as September’s Mercury Retrograde, and of course, your signs are veterans in preparing and dealing with Mercury Retrograde. Right?
Another piece of good news with this Mercury Retrograde is that on December 5, there’s a cool astrological event known as a cazimi.
The biggest challenges may fall on those free-spirited, full-of-fun, adventurous and often ADHD-prone Sagittariuses. Mercury has decided to stay the entire time in your sign and bring its detail-oriented, communication-focused and technologically tricky energy into your world.
For Sags, it’s essential to do something completely counterintuitive to your nature: micromanage yourself. Yep, it’s time to think before you speak or write ANYTHING. Double and triple check your emails, texts, presentations, etc. Remember, even though Mercury is in detriment in your sign, it still has some umph, and it’s sticking with you for three weeks.
Plus, it’s the holidays. People are both festive and frustrated, often at the same time. By simply paying attention to how you communicate and what you say, you’ll lean more to the festive side of the season, which is in keeping with your sign’s penchant for fun.
For all signs, you still need to watch your communication, keep a lid on it when your tech tweaks, and most important for this time of year, build in back-up plans for your travel with an extra dose of patience. Mercury can and will be disruptive.
Another piece of good news with this Mercury Retrograde is that on December 5, there’s a cool astrological event known as a cazimi. A cazimi is when the Sun and a planet form a very tight conjunction, or super close connection—in this case, Mercury and the Sun. Some like to think of it in poetic terms where the planet aligns with the heart of the sun, which is what cazimi means.
When this happens, the Sun’s magnificent light shines through the planet, blending the dynamic energies of both celestial orbs together and creating powerful clarity and understanding.
On December 15, Mercury takes a deep breath and glides forward, or direct, which is an early holiday gift for us all.
So, December 5 will be a break from the retrograde influence of Mercury, and instead, will be a productive day for signing contracts, communications, travel, etc.—all the things that you normally have to be careful of during Mercury Retrograde. It will also be a day that the lessons of this Mercury Retrograde may come into focus or a day that triggers a greater understanding of something in life that moves you in another direction.
Pay attention to what you learn!
Then on December 15, Mercury takes a deep breath and glides forward, or direct, which is an early holiday gift for all of us. It leaves some breathing room before the big, end-of-the-year holidays hit and even bestows upon us a little planning and prep time.
My recommendation: Do what you have to do to handle the challenges of Mercury Retrograde, but spend more time with family and friends, because that is what the season is really about.
Doing so will naturally mitigate anything that Mercury Retrograde throws at you.
