Running Low on Soul Fuel: Confessions of an Overloaded Psychic

Folks, it happened. My inner flame flickered and nearly went out, leaving me exhausted and both physically and spiritually in pain. But fortunately, I caught it in time and did what I needed to do to reignite it.

You’re probably wondering how it happened. At the time, so was I! After all, as a psychic medium and spiritual consultant, I am responsible for caring for my energy in all situations. This is especially true if I’m doing my spiritual work (psychic, mediumship, Tarot or astrology) while coupling it with some other work such as teaching special education.

Don’t get me wrong. I love those kiddos in special ed! They are the greatest teachers in the world, and I’m a better person for having had the privilege to work with them. But the construct of teaching today ain’t what it used to be, and my energy is more quickly drained by the administrative challenges that keep piling up like manure!

"I opened my computer and asked myself what were my non-negotiable self-care strategies..."

When those challenges nearly fried my soul’s backup generator, my physical, mental and spiritual capacities shut down. My soul work suffered and so did my teaching. I became physically ill and emotionally and spiritually depressed.

So, what did I do?

Well, if I’m completely honest, I moped for a while and ate cake and ice cream at my own pity party. But, I finally put the ice cream scoop down and pulled myself up. I decided I was in charge of my energy, and I had to do what it took to preserve it.

I opened my computer and asked myself what were my non-negotiable self-care strategies--the ones I needed to do on a regular basis. So, without further ado, here they are:

Meditation: I am a Virgo with a sensitive nervous system, and I crave grounding. So, for me, self-care means I must do regular grounding meditations and spend time in nature (also grounding for me). Oh, and I practice my own “Masters Meditation” that protects me from those sucking up my energy and those dumping energy on me. (If you're interested in learning more about my Masters Meditation, please email me.)

Eating Right: I’m the first to admit that when I’m stressed or down, food is my friend. And, if I’m completely honest, this is still an area of challenge. But, I needed to let my friend take a backseat to healthy eating and more productive ways to handle stress. I work on this daily, with some days being more successful than others.

Yoga: I’ve come to learn that yoga is one of the best exercises for me. As a Virgo, gentle, mindful stretching shifts my body and mind. I calm my sacred circuitry, clear my head and open up my physical body. Even five- to-ten minutes of yoga a day makes a huge difference.

Pool Walking: If you looked at my natal astrology chart, you’d notice a dearth of water. I have only one planet in a water sign, and it’s lonely! That’s why I love to exercise in the pool. I get to splash around and soak in all the watery energy that I need. (I also prefer living on the water, but a pair of hurricanes have me a bit spooked to do that again.) Still, water makes me happy!

Prioritize My Spiritual Work: When life overtakes my spiritual work, I feel like some unseen force just chopped off my arm. I’m not whole. I’m not together. I’m not me. And it’s damned uncomfortable in my skin. So, now, no matter what else is going on in my life, I put my spiritual work in the self-care category and do it.

If I learned anything through this process it’s that my energy is a precious, finite resource that I must protect. I encourage you to take some quiet time and journal about your non-negotiable self-care strategies. Find out what makes you feel whole and happy, and do whatever you can to protect that.

Until next time.
