Have you ever gazed at a world map and said, “Oooh, I’d love to go to that country,” or “I’d really like to live in that city”, or even, “Why do I feel drawn to go to that state?” At some point, most of us have had that inkling, but we quickly shut down the little voice that’s trying to tell us something and return to what we think reality should be. Then, we flood our brain with all the reasons we shouldn’t go.

But maybe there’s a reason we’re attracted to that location. Maybe there’s a reason we should go!

Now, the Ascendant is the planet that is just rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. Simply put, this sign is the outward you—the you the public sees.

Astrocartography is the branch of astrology that identifies astrological energies throughout the world. It offers information on a myriad of life’s dynamics including where you’d find the best locations for a vacation, a career boost, a love interest, general comfort and happiness and even ideal places for sex!

When you look at an astrocartography map, you basically see a morass of lines around different locations in the world. These lines represent planetary influences and their relationship to key angles: Ascendant/rising sign (AS), Descendant (DS), Midheaven (MC) and Imum Coeli (IC).

Now, the Ascendant is the planet that is just rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. Simply put, this sign is the outward you—the you the public sees.

Logically, the Descendant is the planet that is directly opposite the Ascendant. It is the planet that is setting on the western horizon at the time of your birth. The Descendant is all about relationships or partnerships.

If you know the secrets, you can enjoy benefits of a particular area without every leaving home!

When discussing the Midheaven, it means looking at the highest point in the sky at the time of your birth. On your birth chart, it is at the very top. In many house systems (yes, there are several), the Midheaven aligns with the tenth house, which means it’s all about career and your public presence.

Last, and certainly not least, is the Imum Coeli or IC that translates to the point at the bottom of the sky or typically the fourth house. It reveals energies around family, your roots and ancestry.

When these key angles are blended with your planet positions from your natal chart, it creates an astrocartography map, or a location map of energies that you can explore to help determine whether a particular place in the world would be a good fit for you.

Let’s look at a couple of examples focused on major planetary lines and angles. These are basic but provide a good foundation in understanding how the astrocartography chart works.

Example 1:  You want to find out where the best place for your career would be. In astrology, Jupiter is considered the planet of luck and opportunity, so that planetary influence would be important in your research.

Now, looking at the descriptions of the different angles of your chart, you’ll notice that the Midheaven, which in most house systems aligns with the tenth house, is the angle dealing with career and the public.

So, you would want to find the line on your map that connects the planet Jupiter with your Midheaven (MC) for the best possible area for career.

Example 2: It’s time for romance in your life, so you pull out your astrocartography map and start looking for love. Typically, you would want to look to the planet Venus for love or the Sun for you being able to be you. Then, you’d look to find the lines with Venus or the Sun and your Descendant, because the Descendant connects to relationship energy.

Admittedly, these are simplified examples, but if you work with an astrologer who’s knowledgeable about astrocartography, they can delve into the finer points to consider. In fact, you can become much more granular with minor planetary lines that connect aspects to the map.

Interestingly, once you begin exploring your astrocartography map, you will open up answers to the reasons why you feel pulled to certain locations or even why you feel repelled by particular areas.

Having said all this, astrocartography is not a practice to completely base your life on. Inevitably, there are other factors in your world that need serious consideration and could negate making a move. But used as a companion resource, astrocartography can provide powerful and important information about the right energy for you.

Now, here’s a little extra tip: If you know the secrets, you can enjoy benefits of a particular area without every leaving home! For example, if your Jupiter-Ascendant line (career and public presence) runs through a part of a state or country where you would never want to step foot, you may choose to travel there just for business, advertise for business there or work there remotely online. That way, you maximize the energy toward furthering your career success without having to move to an area that doesn’t appeal to you.

You can use the same strategy for love: Think online dating apps and Zoom to jumpstart your love life without ever leaving the cozy comfort of your couch.

All in all, astrocartography is a powerful tool to help you make location decisions in your quest for a better and more productive life, especially when used in conjunction with other factors important to your life and a good astrologer.
